Abram's Delight Museum
Located in Winchester Virginia, not far from George Washington’s Office Museum, is Abram’s Delight Museum. The home was built in 1754, and is a perfect example of early settlement life in the lower Shenandoah Valley during the French and Indian War. The home has been restored to reflect the style of that century. Originally the home was utilized as a Quaker meetinghouse, the first in Winchester. Abram’s Delight is the oldest house in Winchester Virginia.

An early settler in the Winchester area was Abraham Hollingsworth, a Quaker, who discovered the Shawnee inhabited property that he declared “a delight to behold.” Hollingsworth purchased the 582 acres surrounding a bountiful spring from the Indians and later built a log home and mill on the property. It was later that Abraham’s son, Isaac Hollingsworth, built the stone house named “Abram’s Delight.”

Early American history buffs will enjoy this native limestone house that features genuine antique furnishing and artifacts. The house stood witness to the town’s settlement through the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, and the devastations associated with the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley. The grounds of Abram’s Delight features a replica of the original log cabin and a set of mill wheels representative of the small industry that emerged as the frontier became settled. Today, the offices of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society are located on the second floor of the home.

Abram’s Delight is open to the public from April through the end of October. This Winchester museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.
