Belle
Grove Plantation
Belle Grove Plantation is a beautiful Virginia Plantation home that was built between 1794 and 1797, and is located in Middletown Virginia. The home was built for Major Isaac Hite, Jr., grandson of Josh Hite, a German
immigrant who had settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia on 140,000 acres. Isaac Hite Jr. attended William and Mary College and served in the Revolutionary War and later married Nelly Conway Madison, the sister of James Madison, who would later become President of the United States. The 483 acres that Belle Grove Plantation sits on was given to Hite and his new bride by his father, and the large home was built with limestone that was quarried from the property. Taking nearly 3 years to build, Belle Grove Plantation was the showcase of Hite’s wealth and status.
After his first wife died, Hite married Ann Tunstall Maury and had many children.
Together the family made several additions to the original construction. A portion of the one hundred foot façade was completed by adding more to the west end of the home, and Hite also added a general store, grist mill, saw mill and distillery nearby, all of which he owned. The grain and livestock plantation thrived and Major Hite went on to acquire more than 7,500 acres of land that surrounded Belle Grove Plantation before his death in 1851. After both Hite and his wife had passed, Belle Grove Plantation was sold outside of the family.
By the Civil War period the home had been changed a bit.
In 1864, Belle Grove Plantation withstood the violence and war that raged during the Battle of Cedar Creek which took place very close to the home itself. Belle Grove Plantation withstood the battle and was left intact and seemingly untouched. After the war, the home passed
between several individuals in the later 19th and 20th century, and today is owned and managed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is part of the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historic Park.
This Virginia Plantation is one of the most stunning mansions found in the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and showcases the architecture and daily life
of the area’s early settlers. The design of the home was strongly influenced by the Classical Revival movement which was very popular in that day, and the interior of the home shows the hand carved wood workings that were inspired by the Georgian period. This Virginia Historic Landmark is a true gem and a place any history lover simply must visit.
