Edith J. Carrier Arboretum
The Edith J. Carrier Arboretum at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia is one of the best places to tour in Virginia’s pristine Shenandoah Valley region. This gorgeous walk through nature preserve contains many rare and unique plants that are only found in the Shenandoah Valley. Children love look at the spectacular array of flowers, and adults learn something new each time they visit.

Tour the numerous gardens for a rare and up close look at over 92 species of lady slippers, a native plant found on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Special varieties like the Turk’s cap lily, Dutchman’s breeches and wild ginger grow in the Andrew Wood Memorial Garden located at this great Virginia Arboretum. Other variety gardens like the Rose Garden, Shrub Garden, Fern Valley, Herb Gardens, and Larkin Smith Rock Gardens with its endemic species intrigue many and always photograph well. The special Bog Garden was added to the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum’s many other plots in 1999, and visitors can see cranberry plants, lambkills, bald cypress, and sundews as well.

This neat Family Attraction in Virginia is a great place to learn more about plants and the growing cycle, and children delight in looking at the different varieties of interesting flowers. Tour the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but be sure to call ahead for reservations.
