Fort
Loudoun Virginia
Fort Loudoun, the former headquarters of
Colonial George Washington, is located in
the
Shenandoah Valley of Winchester
Virginia. Fort Loudoun is considered to
be the most formidable fort in Virginia,
as it was never attacked. The fort was
named after Lord Loudoun, who was
Commander in Chief of the British Armies. Today a marker
stands between the sidewalk and fenced
yard describing the fort and its
significance. The marker is most visible
during daylight hours.
The square fortification containing four
bastions was constructed of Earth, wood,
and stone. Col. George Washington,
commander of the Virginia Regiment,
designed and supervised the construction
of the fort in 1756 during the period
of the French and Indian War. Fort
Loudoun served as the command center for
a number of forts authorized by the
Virginia House of Burgesses.
The French and Indian War Foundation of
Frederick County purchased an antebellum
house on part of the
archaeological site of Fort Loudoun. The
house lot is still adorned with the
original well where Col. Washington
ordered it to be dug among bedrock of
limestone, on the site of the fort. The
well was also the site of the northwest
bastion. Today, the well is marked with
a modern concrete cap and pump, but it
is believed that the well still exists
underneath. The well is the only
remaining remnant of the fort.
