Kernstown
Battlefield
The Kernstown Battlefield Association
has preserved Kernstown Battlefield,
located in Winchester and
Frederick
Counties among the Pritchard-Grim farm.
This historic site is well known for
being the location of
the First and Second Battles of Kernstown. With the help of public
grants from each of the local, state,
and federal governments, the Kernstown
Battlefield Association has successfully
purchased the National Historic
Landmark, and the
more than three hundred acre
Pritchard-Grim farm is now protected by
a permanent preservation easement.
Today, the battlefield community has
changed little since the Civil War. In
fact, pre-Civil War structures such as
Benner’s Tavern, Pritchard House and the Opequon Presbyterian Church cemetery
still mark the territory. Unique to the
Shenandoah Valley is the cemetery where
the earliest marked gravesite exists,
dating back to 1742. Today’s church is
the third on site, and considered to be
the eldest Presbyterian congregation
west of the Blue Ridge. The Grim farm
lies in the heart of the battlefields,
between Kernstown and Sandy Ridge, and
is considered to be part of the Virginia
and National Registers of Historic
Places.
Kernstown Battlefield is yet another
historical remnant that portrays the
important role our Winchester area
played in the first years of our nation.
