The Loudoun Museum's vast collection
mostly consists of textile materials
made in Loudoun County or areas nearby
in the Shenandoah Valley. Much of the
collection dates back to the 18th and
19th centuries and includes items such
as quilts, clothing, and needlework
accessories. The Loudoun Museum's
library has over 500 books on Loudoun
County history and includes many
important, rare books from the 18th,
19th, and 20th centuries. The library
maintains and provides an excellent
record of the county's history as well.
Here visitors can browse over 2,000
manuscripts and photographs related to
Loudoun County including the famous
Lucas-Heaton Letters. The Lucas-Heaton
Letters were correspondences between the
Lucas brothers, two former slaves that
left the states to live in the American
colony of Liberia, and the Heaton
brothers, a family in Purcellville, who
had freed the young men. Other items
include civil war currency, letters, and
wonderfully preserved journals.
