Museum
of American Presidents
The Museum of American Presidents is
attributed to grade school teacher Leo M Bernstein’s passion for
the Presidents beginning in the 1920s. A
native to Washington DC, Bernstein had a
strong fascination for history and the
collection of memorabilia. Prior to
Bernstein’s purchase of Middletown’s
Wayside Inn in the 1950s, he shared his
collection of presidential memorabilia
in each of the seven banks that he
served as chief executive. Later,
Bernstein founded the Wayside Foundation
of American History and Arts, who now
operates the museum that displays his
collection.
Appropriately placed in
the Shenandoah Valley, the Museum is home to artifacts
of past Presidents and some First
Ladies. Four of the first five
Presidents were native to the Shenandoah
Valley and valued the Old Dominion. Some
artifacts featured in the museum include
an original handwritten letter from
Thomas Jefferson and the desk of James
Madison used to carefully craft the
Federalist Papers and the US
Constitution.
Children are encouraged to experience
the history of the home through play.
Children can try on period clothing,
play colonial games, and experience
colonial education in the one-room
schoolhouse by sitting at vintage desks
nearby a pot-bellied stove.
The Museum of American Presidents is
open Friday through Monday from 10 am to
5 pm. A small admission fee is charged
for admittance. Parking is made
available at the Strasburg Emporium.
