Old
Court House Civil War Museum
Winchester Virginia’s newest Civil War
Museum, the Old Court House Civil War
Museum is located in the old county
courthouse. The Frederick County
Courthouse was built in 1840 and used as
a prison and hospital during the Civil
War. The courthouse replaced the 1741
courthouse that was considered the first
beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. It
wasn’t until 2003 that extensive
renovation took place at the courthouse,
per a strong recommendation of placing a
Civil War Museum in the building in
1996.
The Old Court House Civil War Museum
displays more than 3,000 artifacts from
the Civil War. Personal items along with
period photographs tell the hard life of
the suffering soldier. Additional
exhibits showcase nationally recognized
collections of relics. Historians and
interested patrons are encouraged to
visit the Civil War Museum to discover
the life of these hard working soldiers.
Keep an eye out, because it is said that
captured soldier’s graffiti can be found
on the walls.
The Old Court House Civil War Museum is
open Wednesday-Sunday. A small fee is
charged for admission, and discounts are
available for senior, military persons,
college students, and AAA members.
