Shenandoah
& Luray Caverns
Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is steeped with history and beauty and it is home to two stunning natural cave attractions: Shenandoah Caverns
VA and Luray Caverns VA.
Shenandoah Caverns VA are located right off of I-81 at the Shenandoah Caverns Exit 269 and are nearby to the Shenandoah National Park and all of the great Shenandoah Valley attractions. These actively forming caves were discovered in 1884 by two curious teenage boys after a construction blast left crevices that leaked interesting vapors. The boys descended 150 feet below ground and discovered large and beautiful rock formations in a series of “rooms”. Today, visitors can safely tour all 17 rooms of Shenandoah Caverns and learn more about how caves formed in the Shenandoah Valley.
Tours of Shenandoah Caverns begin with an elevator ride down into the cave. Just past the elevator exit visitors will come to the first set of rock formations, the Bacon Formations. The Bacon Formations were made famous after being featured in National Geographic and are appropriately named as they do resemble cooked bacon. After leaving the Bacon Formations tourists are taken to the Grotto of the Gods, a wide, open room that is draped in calcite formations; this area is a great place to take pictures. Other great formations like Diamond Cascade, The Tea Gardens, and Long View Hall offer some spectacular picture taking spots and are neat to learn about. The tour ends at Rainbow Lake; a beautiful and vibrantly colored pool of water that surprises and enchants everyone with its rainbow of colors. Tours last 30 to 40 minutes and it is 80% wheelchair accessible. Pets on a leash are welcome.
Just a short drive away from the Shenandoah Caverns is Luray Caverns in Luray Virginia. Luray Caverns
VA is a spectacular show cave featuring a large underground system of different stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, mud flows, columns and mirrored pools. Visitors by the thousands come to visit Luray Caverns to view its beautiful natural forms and its famous Great Stalacpipe Organ. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is a gigantic lithophone made from stalactites of various sizes and it musical tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks and bells. The organ can be heard on tours of Luray Caverns and it is the largest and oldest naturally formed lithophone in the world.
Both Luray Caverns VA and the Shenandoah Caverns are great Family Attractions in Virginia and are wonderful places to visit while on your vacation. Children love learning about the actively forming caves and interesting mineral deposits and adults love the great opportunities for pictures. Be sure to visit these two great places in Virginia Shenandoah Valley.
