Shenandoah
Apple Blossom Festival
The annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester Virginia is “a springtime extravaganza in the Shenandoah Valley.” The celebration, from April 24 to May 3, marks the beginning of the spring and honors the most important natural resource in the Winchester-Frederick County Virginia area. The festival has continued for more than eighty years; originally beginning in 1924. The festival was suspended in 1942 due to America’s entry into World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor,
but resumed in 1945, and has continued uninterrupted since.
The highlight of the Apple Blossom Festival is the crowning of Queen Shenandoah and the Grand Feature Parade. Nominations for Queen Shenandoah receive invitations before embarking on the competitive selection process. The annual Queen Shenandoah is chosen after contestants complete a complex process that involves festival organizers, former queens, and political figures. The Queen is announced in March and crowned at the festival. The Grand Feature parade includes more than 170 units that include floats, marching bands, celebrities, clowns, and official cars. The parade is heavily prepared for, and generally lasts about three hours.
More than thirty events scattered between the months of January and May make up the phenomenal festival. More than 275,000 people are in attendance for the festival over the six-day period. These events include: dances, luncheons, parades, band competitions, a circus, carnival, a 10k run, firefighters’ events, a two-day craft show, fireworks, activities for seniors and children, a car show, and celebrity appearances. The festival has something for everyone in the family, so be sure to bring everyone along!
The community of Winchester Virginia comes together to celebrate the apple blossoms signaling the beginning of spring. Many residents decorate their homes in the traditional festival colors: green, pink, and white. These colors represent the bloom of the apple trees. Show your support and wear the official festival colors when you attend.
