Shenandoah
Valley Discovery Museum
The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum
is a children’s inquiry museum catered
to their learning needs. The museum’s
conception was the result of a need for
a science and cultural center in
Shenandoah Valley. The museum is
intended to be a continuing process of
education that is beyond the traditional
realms of a classroom curriculum. More
than 400,000 visitors have been to the
museum since its opening, with more than
39,000 visitors in 2007 alone.
The mission of the museum is to spark
creativity and curiosity while inspiring
learning in children that visit through
the use of interactive, hands-on
exhibits and programs. The exhibits
focus on scientific and mathematical
concepts in addition to cultural and art
awareness. The use of play facilitates
learning at the Shenandoah Valley
Discovery Museum by allowing children
and parents to participate in informal,
interactive experiments that challenge
the use of imagination and the sharing
of ideas.
The museum features more than fifteen
exceptional exhibits that encourage
inquiry, experimentation, and hands-on
fun. The Paleontology Lab greets
visitors at the main entrance and
showcases fossils that date back as far
as 600 million years ago, during Earth’s
Devonian Era. The Simple Machines
exhibit demonstrates a variety of
simple mechanics on their very own Apple
Packing Shed. Children can act like
packers and use the conveyer belt,
wheelbarrow, pulleys, and other simple
machines. The Emergency Clinic &
Ambulance exhibit is a favorite of
children as there are crutches and
wheelchairs to play with. Shenandoah Valley heritage is preserved
at A Stop Along the Moccasin trail.
Authentic Native American clothing is
available for dress up in the hand
harvested and hand-made log home.
Additional attractions include the giant
kaleidoscope, the climbing wall, and
multiple illusions that can be found
throughout the museum. Your trip to the
museum is not complete without a visit
to the Gift Shop. Items include science experiment kits, art
and crafts, musical instruments,
t-shirts, puzzles and more. The Gift
Shop is reasonably priced for children
looking to spend their week’s allowance.
