Shenandoah Valley Activities - Winchester Virginia

Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters Museum
General “Stonewall” Thomas Jackson used a Hudson River Gothic Revival style home as his headquarters during the winter of 1861 and 1862. This home is now a Virginia and National Historic Landmark located in Winchester Virginia.

The six-room cottage belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Lewis T Moore during the Civil War, who invited Jackson to use his home as a headquarters. Jackson occupied two rooms in the home, one as a bedroom on the upper level, and another as an office directly below. Jackson’s office remains virtually the same as it did when he occupied it, preserving the essence of his surroundings.

The home currently holds the largest collection of Jackson memorabilia, and various personal objects from members of his staff. Some of these artifacts include Jackson’s personal prayer table and initialed prayer book, in addition to other Jackson family artifacts. Jackson’s office has been papered with a reproduction of the original wallpaper he once spoke elegantly of in a letter home to Mrs. Jackson.

The Stonewall Jackson Headquarters Museum features a gift shop that offers a wide variety of Civil War books, journals, and gifts. Periodically, the museum also holds special events and exhibits. The museum is open daily, with the exception of  November through March, when the museum is only open on weekend days. Please contact our sales office on block ticket purchases that include admittance to Abram’s Delight Museum, Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum, and George Washington’s Office Museum. These are just a few of the exciting Shenandoah Valley activities to explore.
