Winchester
Speedway
What was originally referred to as the Airport
Speedway in 1936 when it was established
has since evolved into the Winchester
Speedway. The speedway is a favorite
pastime of Winchester community members
as the family-orientated facility
prohibits the consumption of alcohol. The
use of profanity is forbidden and
grounds for removal. Race nights begin
with the gates opening at 4:30, hot laps
begin at 6:15, and race time is 7:00pm.
In more than seventy years since its
opening day the track has adapted to
changes, but one thing that hasn’t
changed is the clay surfaced ¾ mile
track. Since the mid-1950s the infield
has become available for use. Prior to
the 1950s a small pond resided in the
infield preventing drivers from parking
there. The wooden grandstand that lined
the backstretch from 1948 to 1974 has
since been replaced. Another change the
track has undergone is the sheer speed
at which the racecars reach; in 1936 the
top speed recorded was 45 mph, and now
racecars exceeds speeds of more than 110
mph.
Admission to the speedway is moderate,
and children under the age of twelve are
admitted for free. Guests are also
available in the pits for an additional
cost. Children under the age of fourteen
are not permitted in the pit area in
order to prevent dangerous situations.
Winchester Speedway is a great
opportunity to spend time with the
family while enjoying motor sports in
Winchester Virginia. We’ll see you in
the grandstands!
